For the first time in maybe 6 years, I didn’t have any office Christmas party to attend to last year. It doesn’t really make a difference since all the parties I attended to while I was still employed at Concentrix are not the usual intimate office parties where everyone exchanges gifts and small groups present dance numbers with one group trying to be funny. Concentrix parties are like BIG and highly entertaining production numbers, like the ones we see on TV on Sundays. Minus Piolo Pascual or Janno Gibbs.
For the holidays of 2011, I was only expecting a small gathering from our high school batch following our ten-year reunion last year. However, we had to skip the party as we had a bigger, unexpected activity for 2011…and that is to reach out to those who were badly affected by the tropical storm that hit our city in December. It’s the same storm that forced me and some college friends to cancel our christmas dinner which was scheduled on that same night. It didn’t feel like a storm at first, but when it rains in CDO, laags are usually cancelled.
It’s amazing how we were able to get all the help we need through Facebook and SMS in such a short span of time. It was great seeing batchmates working together for this activity; not only those who were in town shared their time and effort, but those who were in other parts of the country and abroad did whatever they can to contribute for the affected families who urgently needed help.
The whole relief efforts was also a great opportunity to get to know batch 2000 graduates from other institutions, like Xavier University High School and Montessori de Oro who invited our batch to join them in this endeavor. Our batch has learned so much from what that storm brought to CDO, and I’m sure CDO has too. I hope we use all we have learned to help CDO rise again.
It was a different kind of Christmas, and it still seemed like one big, productive and memorable party. :-)

Although I’m not used to seeing Usher with lots of hair, I like this video.

For a change, I am writing about something else, and not people who annoy me. Haha. I have been dealing with some money issues lately and I think that I have finally found something productive out of this stressor—-learning from it. I have come up with some tips to actually save money. and these are all based on experience (haha). 1. If you are not too stressed out or too sleepy after working 10 hours or more at the office, take the jeep home. Taxis are super tempting, but you will pat yourself on the back once you have realized how much pamasahe money you will save once you take jeepneys on your way home from work. Now what if you have issues riding the jeep alone? A solution to that would be to leave the office after the shift with your other officemates. It is likely that they’re mostly headed to a common destination, so you don’t have to spend too long solo flights on a jeep. Besides, travelling with friends or co-workers should be fun. 2. Mom and Dad always remind us never to miss meals wherever we go—-and of course, to eat right. Eating right doesn’t mean spending for lunch or dinner at fancy or “semi-fancy” restaurants after work. Not even fastfood chains. So instead of shelling out a hundred bucks or so for some meal at a fast food chain, or spending more at restaurants which includes paying for the “good ambiance”, why not eat at the office cafeteria? They should serve good meals. With vegetables. and maybe some fish. These are the right meals—-with the right prices. Daily savings collected from not eating expensively will make you save more money for some twice a month food trip—-and makes you look forward to these treats too! Bring packed lunch at work is a great thing, too! 3. If you buy coffee from dispensers, you should know that only 2/3 of each cup is filled…and notice how small those cups are! If you really have to consume coffee to keep you alert and awake at work, try the sachets. A price of one cup of instant, flavored, and foamy coffee can make you buy three sachets of 3-in-1-prepare-it-yourself coffee. 4. Choose a prepaid mobile service account over a postpaid account and avail of all those call and text promos. It will also make you environment-friendly by saving paper where they print all your monthly bills. 5. Don’t get a credit card. If you want to buy something, save for it.
Since I have been craving for something sweet these past few days, I asked one of my colleagues who’s currently in Manila to get me Sonja’s Cupcakes as a pasalubong.
She said she couldn’t afford it and will bring Krispy Kreme doughnuts instead.
While we were texting this afternoon, she couldn’t contain her excitement as she was waiting for her new Louis bag she purchased for 38K. How fun. What made her extra excited is that the store offered to do some monogram of her initials on her new bag and her old on.
She usually replies with the shortest messages (if ever she replies), but today was an exception. She was VERY excited.
Cheers to the new bag, _ A _ _ _!
